In an existing Queensland home, non-removable 10-year battery-powered photoelectric smoke alarms can be installed without an electrician where battery-powered alarms are appropriate for the dwelling and location.
If you are replacing an existing required 240V hardwired smoke alarm, its replacement must also be hardwired and the electrical work must be completed by a licensed electrician.
Building or substantially renovating? New construction and major renovation requirements differ from a typical existing-home battery installation, so check the applicable Queensland requirements for that work.
When can I install a battery smoke alarm myself?
For an existing home, a battery-powered installation may be appropriate where:
- you are adding a required battery-powered alarm in a location where battery alarms are appropriate
- you are replacing an existing battery-powered smoke alarm
- the alarm is photoelectric, complies with AS 3786:2014 and has a non-removable 10-year battery
- you install it in the correct Queensland location and follow the manufacturer's instructions
What if I already have a 240V hardwired alarm?
Existing required 240V hardwired smoke alarms must be replaced with suitable 240V hardwired alarms.
